I’ve never tallied the total number of breast augmentation surgeries I’ve performed in Columbia during the past 25 years, but it’s safe to say it’s in the thousands. Experience is an excellent teacher, and some of the things I’ve learned from listening to all those patients over the years are bits of wisdom for women thinking about getting breast implants. Here are 5 tips that I think are worth passing along:
Be open-minded: Some patients come to the first consultation with a list of specific things they know they want. There’s nothing wrong with that. Just be prepared to adapt to changes that might be necessary because of your skin type, the shape of your body, or other physical realities that might mean you need to go a size lower than what you had your heart set on.
Get in shape: Women generally want larger breasts to enhance their appearance and improve their self-esteem. It makes sense that exercise should be part of that effort. Even more important, being in good shape helps you recover more quickly after breast surgery. Walking as much as possible in the days after surgery is a good thing.
Make arrangements beforehand: Do the laundry. Make your bed with fresh sheets. Buy at least 2 new bras. If you’re not married or don’t have a roommate or partner, make sure you’ve arranged to have someone drive you home and help you during the first few days after surgery.
It’s normal to feel anxious: That’s true both before and after the surgery. Many women have second thoughts after the surgery because the swelling makes it appear their breasts are larger than they wanted. A recent study, though, found that more than 98 percent of women said they were happy with getting breast implants after their results were settled.
Call your doctor: I can’t emphasize this enough. Call my office with any questions or concerns you have, before and after the surgery. The doctor-patient relationship doesn’t end when the surgery is completed.
