The dynamic nature of plastic surgery is one of the things I most enjoy about my career. Year after year, technological advances and increasing access to information result in subtle trends that emerge as time passes. As a breast augmentation specialist in Columbia, Missouri, I’ve noticed a number of emerging trends in breast procedures, in particular, over the past few years.
Recently released statistics from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons® (ASPS) confirm the trends I’ve seen at my practice. Check out some of these interesting figures from the ASPS stats:
- Silicone is surging, with 77% of breast augmentation patients choosing silicone implants in 2014. This is a trend that shows no signs of reversing. Year after year, more patients are opting for silicone gel breast implants that look and feel remarkably like natural breasts. Many women with older saline implants come in for revision breast augmentation surgery to replace them with the newer generation of silicone implants. There will always be a place for saline implants in breast augmentation, but I expect the percentage of women choosing silicone will continue increasing.
- Breast reconstruction procedures increased 7% from 2013 to 2014. This is a wonderful trend to see, because it indicates the effectiveness of efforts to increase awareness of the reconstruction options available to women who undergo a mastectomy. Advances in surgical techniques and breast implants have led to breast reconstruction results that are very beautiful and that help cancer patients restore a sense of normalcy. I believe more women will choose to undergo breast reconstruction as awareness expands.
- Male breast reduction surgery rose 14% in 2014. Men whose self-esteem is impacted by the overdevelopment of their breasts — a condition called gynecomastia — are undergoing male breast reduction surgery more often. The procedure results in a more masculine-looking chest. The specific approach to surgery depends on the individual case, but it often includes liposuction. The increasing acceptability of getting body contouring surgery will help more men to turn to plastic surgeons for male breast reduction, which can be a major boost to their self-confidence.
