Rhinoplasty and Your Nose: 4 Facts to Consider

Profile of a woman's face before and after rhinoplasty.

Rhinoplasty (nose surgery) at my Columbia, MO, plastic surgery practice continues to be one of the most requested procedures. It’s likely because even the most subtle changes to the size and shape of the nose can have such a substantial effect on the overall appearance of the face.

Even though the cosmetic benefits of the surgery are clear, there’s more to choosing rhinoplasty than many people realize. In this blog post, I’ll review 4 considerations to keep in mind as you decide whether the procedure is right for you.

1. The surgery can improve function as well as form.

It’s true that most people choose rhinoplasty for cosmetic reasons, but the surgery can actually have a big effect on the nose’s functionality. Chronic breathing problems are commonly the result of structural issues such as a deviated septum. We can conveniently fix these concerns while we address the nose’s aesthetic features.

2. Rhinoplasty was 2018’s most popular facial plastic surgery.

More people chose rhinoplasty than any other facial plastic surgery last year, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons’ annual report. One big reason for that: The nose is a prominent facial feature and has a dramatic effect on the overall look of the face. The surgery’s versatility is also a likely reason for its popularity. Many different issues can be corrected with rhinoplasty, including concerns related to size, angle, symmetry, and shape, making it an appropriate choice for a wide range of people.

3. Not every nose (or nose surgery) is the same.

Some men and women considering rhinoplasty are put off by the idea of a having a “cookie cutter” nose that doesn’t match the rest of their face. However, there is no such thing as a “one size fits all” nose job. Each nose is unique and therefore each surgery must be customized to address specific issues.

It’s important to consider what it is about your own nose that you would like to improve, whether it involves the tip of the nose, the nostrils, the ridge, or the overall size. Even if you have just a general idea, a personal consultation with me will help you better understand the possibilities of the surgery and how it can be specifically tailored to you.

4. Nose surgery may provide unexpected benefits.

In addition to basic aesthetic and breathing improvements, there are many unexpected benefits associated with rhinoplasty. Many people are surprised to learn the surgery can reduce nasal congestion and help them stop snoring. Another plus is easier breathing during exercise once you heal. I wrote in an earlier blog post about when you can expect to resume working out after your surgery.
