That “Miraculous” Weight-Loss Remedy Might Actually Be a Tummy Tuck

Before and after of a woman showcasing the results possible with a tummy tuck

Social media is filled with products that promise “miracle” results for everything from breast enhancement to getting rid of acne. You should especially be wary of detox teas, 1 of the most prominent health fads, which often feature before-and-after photos of people who have “lost weight” as a result of drinking detox tea. In reality, many of the posts actually show people who have lost excess stomach skin from surgical intervention. Our tummy tuck patients in Columbia, MO, know that only surgery can remove excess abdominal skin.

Be Skeptical of Before-and-After Photos

If you use sites such as Pinterest, Facebook, or Instagram, chances are you’ve seen some of the many types of detox teas promoted. These teas promise many benefits and often show dramatic before-and-after photos of extreme physical transformations, which are claimed to be from weight loss. There are a number of good reasons to question these claims and whether the photos show people who have lost weight or who have actually had tummy tuck surgery.

First, it’s important to understand that the weight loss triggered by detox teas is generally water weight, not fat. Second, and most important in terms of this blog post, weight loss can’t shrink excess skin. Look closely at the “after” photos in detox tea promotions. Do the people in the after photos look like they have flatter stomachs because they actually have less skin than in the before photo? Do you see evidence of scarring? If so, these people have likely had a tummy tuck vs. losing weight from tea. Tummy tuck scars can be quite discreet (and photo manipulation software can also be used), but sometimes you’ll see scars that indicate plastic surgery.

Tummy Tuck Benefits

There really isn’t any alternative to tummy tuck surgery that can produce similar results. A tummy tuck isn’t weight-loss surgery. In fact, it’s designed for women and men who have lost a significant amount of weight and have loose skin that doesn’t “shrink-to-fit” their bodies’ new contours. The most common patients are women who have had children. Pregnancy stretches the abdominal skin and can separate the abdominal muscles.

About Tummy Tuck Surgery

During tummy tuck surgery, the plastic surgeon makes an incision just above the pubic area so any resulting scar can be easily concealed by a bikini bottom. If needed, the surgeon repairs the damaged abdominal muscles (a condition called diastasis recti) and usually performs liposuction to remove pockets of unwanted fat. Excess skin is removed, and the procedure concludes with suturing the incision. It’s easy to see that drinking detox tea won’t produce the same results.

Women and men who get tummy tuck surgery are among the most satisfied patients I see at my practice. The dramatic results often exceed their expectations. You can see the types of outcomes produced by this procedure in our gallery of before-and-after photos.
