Your Breast Reduction Procedure
Women who undergo breast reduction surgery are typically the most satisfied of all plastic surgery patients. Besides eliminating physical pain, the surgery results in a better-proportioned body and enhanced self-esteem. Health insurance plans sometimes cover breast reduction surgery to relieve physical ailments.
The most common technique used in breast reduction surgery is to make an incision that circles the areola and extends vertically down the midline of the breast, much like the lollipop incision for a breast lift. Another incision follows the natural curve along the midpoint under the breast. Your surgeon removes excess glandular tissue, fat, and skin and re-positions the nipple and areola to a higher placement. Areola size is typically reduced in proportion to the reduction in breast size.
Levels of Breast Droop
Most women with large, heavy breasts experience sagging. Breast reduction surgery also lifts the breasts, along with reducing their volume.
- Pseudoptosis: Sometimes the breast’s glandular tissue falls below the lower breast’s skin fold, but the nipple remains above the fold and points slightly up.
- Ptosis Grade 1: When the nipple is at the same level as the skin fold or just slightly below.
- Ptosis Grade 2: If the nipple is between 1 and 3 centimeters below the skin fold.
- Ptosis Grade 3: The nipple is more than 3 centimeters below the skin fold.
Your Breast Reduction Consultation
Your initial consultation is an important meeting. Dr. Seaberg believes that understanding a woman’s decision to undergo breast surgery is as important as a physical evaluation. He will typically take between 45 to 90 minutes during the appointment and carefully assess your medical history and physical condition. Together, you and Dr. Seaberg will decide on the best course of action for your breast reduction.Back to Top
