Am I a Good Candidate for Facial Implants?

Patients bothered by a small or weak chin or a lack of definition in the bone structure of their face may benefit from chin implants (mentoplasty) or cheek implants (malarplasty). Combined with rhinoplasty (nose surgery), implants can majorly overhaul your appearance. It's important that people considering any plastic surgery are in good overall health and understand the limits of cosmetic procedures. Facial implants may be an option for you if:

  • You have a recessed, or small, chin
  • You want to create a more defined facial profile
  • Various features of your face aren't proportional
  • Your cheeks are hollow due to heredity or aging
  • You want to accentuate your upper cheeks by making them appear higher and fuller

The Procedures

Chin implants are inserted in front of the jawbone through a small incision inside the mouth. The implant is tucked into a small pocket created just under the skin. Dr. Seaberg may decide to instead make an incision outside of your mouth, below the chin. Incisions for cheek augmentation are based partly on where the implant will be placed. Usually, implants are inserted through incisions made inside the mouth. Patients may be placed under general anesthesia or have intravenous sedation for their implant surgery. Dr. Seaberg will recommend what he believes is best for you. Your face will be bandaged immediately after surgery.

The First Step

A consultation with Dr. Seaberg is both informative and reassuring. With 25 years of experience as a plastic surgeon, Dr. Seaberg can answer all of your questions and counsel you about choosing cosmetic surgery to achieve the appearance you desire. In addition to providing detailed pre- and postoperative instructions, he will make sure you understand both the possibilities and limitations of cheek and chin implants, and any other procedures you are considering. He will also ask about your medical history and your goals, and he'll examine your skin texture and facial structure. A consultation typically lasts 45 to 90 minutes.
