As we age our skin loses its elasticity; instead of being taut and smooth it begins to sag and wrinkle. Jowls and double-chins also begin to appear. Years of sun exposure, squinting, and frowning take a greater toll on some types of skin than others. Repairing the effects of aging is accomplished with a facelift. Columbia plastic surgeon Dr. John J. Seaberg is among the most experienced plastic surgeons in mid-Missouri. He provides natural-looking results for men and women who desire a younger appearance.

If you're ready to rejuvenate your appearance with a facelift and live in Jefferson City or other areas near Columbia, request a consultation online, or schedule an appointment with Dr. Seaberg by calling (573) 443-5500.

Am I a Good Candidate for a Facelift?

Patients who are satisfied after getting a facelift understand at the outset both the benefits and limitations of the procedure. Many people opt to combine a facelift with either a brow lift or eyelid surgery, or both, to complete their facial rejuvenation. Men and women who choose to get a facelift are typically looking to:

  • Lift sagging facial muscles
  • Tighten loose skin
  • Eliminate jowls along the jawline and the appearance of a double-chin
  • Soften deep creases around the nose and beneath the eyes

The Procedure

A face lift can be performed using either a local anesthetic with an intravenous sedation, or under general anesthesia. The decision often depends on the extent of surgery being performed and the patient's preference. For a traditional facelift, Dr. Seaberg makes an incision that typically begins around the hairline at the front of the ear near the temple and curves around the earlobe, ending at the bottom of the hairline. Another small incision under the chin is needed to tighten sagging neck skin. Surgery lasts approximately 2 to 4 hours, depending on the extent of correction needed.

The Recovery

Expect recovery to take 10 days to 2 weeks. Sutures are normally removed within a week. You can go out socially about 2 weeks after the surgery, although there will still be some swelling. It will be 4 to 6 weeks before the swelling is imperceptible.

The First Step

Your initial consultation with Dr. Seaberg is the time when you can communicate why you want to get a facelift and your goals for the procedure. Besides asking about your general health history, Dr. Seaberg will examine your face to assess its shape and skin tone and explain the procedure in more detail. In some cases, Dr. Seaberg suggests non-surgical alternatives to facelifts if he believes that is a more appropriate path at the time.
