Am I a Good Candidate for Liposuction?

Liposuction remains one of the most popular cosmetic surgical procedures performed in the U.S., and it's easy to see why. It's a revolutionary technique that safely improves your appearance without the recovery time of more invasive surgery. It isn't, however, a substitute for a healthy lifestyle. The best liposuction candidates are at a stable weight and are seeking a more streamlined body. It is often performed a part of other plastic surgery procedures including a tummy tuck and a facelift.

The Procedure

You can become quickly overwhelmed researching liposuction. It's difficult to keep track of the various liposuction techniques, each promising a safe, pain-free experience. It's likely your research has led you to conclude that traditional liposuction performed using local anesthesia - known as tumescent liposuction - is the best choice for most procedures. Dr. Seaberg agrees.

In the hands of an experienced surgeon, the small tube used in liposuction (called a cannula) safely and effectively removes localized pockets of fat cells from areas such as the hips, thighs and flanks. In tumescent liposuction, a solution is injected that numbs the area and causes the tissue to become swollen and firm. Dr. Seaberg removes fat from the targeted area with little discomfort for the patient. Another advantage of tumescent liposuction is limited bleeding.

Liposuction is sometimes performed under general anesthesia in a hospital setting if you are planning to have multiple areas treated.

The First Step

Your initial consultation with Dr. Seaberg is an important part of your decision to undergo liposuction. Dr. Seaberg will evaluate your medical history and perform a physical examination. He also takes the time to answer any questions you might have about the procedure and will ask about your expectations. Consultations generally take from 45 to 90 minutes. You will also receive detailed pre- and post-operative instructions.
